Technology - Friend or Foe?

I have been thinking a lot about my use of modern technology. I spend a lot of time using it everyday. I do the accounting for my family's business, so many hours each week are spent at my desk in front of the computer. I have a laptop that I keep in my living room where I spend time blogging, reading blogs, and just general web surfing. I also have an iPhone which enables me to be connected at all times. I am able to check my email, Facebook, the weather, anything. I LOVE my iPhone! I wonder how I survived without it. But is being so connected, all the time, a good thing?

Sure, it's great to have access to information at the click of the mouse. Yes, it's important to be able to be contacted in the event of an emergency. But is it necessary to check personal email constantly throughout the day or to check Facebook to see what your "friends" are up to? Or to be constantly playing games or uploading apps? Probably not.

I find myself playing with my phone quite often. And honestly I haven't thought about it being a problem because I try not to let it interfere with my real life people interaction. But when I see other people preoccupied with their phone, it makes me realize that, when I am with my family and friends, I should put my phone away. My family and friends deserve my attention and are way more important than playing some silly game. And really, email is just not that important.

I completely understand!! I had to go through something similar to detox when I came to NZ and had to give up my iPhone. I'm talking shakes...the whole thing...ok, maybe it wasn't that extreme! It became a joke every time I had a question my first response was to check my phone ... until I realized I didn't have it anymore. Now, I've decided it's been a good thing and I've finally gotten over my obsession with my phone!

That was an eye opener. You are right, family and friends are more important and deserve our time NOT shared with an iPhone or in my case a Blackberry. Point taken! Great post.

Happy SITS day!!

I don't have an iphone or a blackberry, so those things don't distract me, but I do have a laptop in the living room that sometimes distracts me too much. However, I can't imagine how people stayed home all day with babies before the Internet. That being said I definitely need to be better about not getting on when my hubby is around just to goof around online.

I hate it when I am hanging out with friends and they spend more time texting than even talking to the me who is standing right in front of them....technology is handy, but I really think it has deteriated real life relationships. I heard a statistic that you use your phone on an average of 3 times more than you kiss or hug another person. I try to hug more people...

thanks for stopping by cheap therapy....love your blog and your kids = adorable!

A very interesting post. Just yesterday my husband and I had run out and he forgot his Iphone. When we got back home he immediately started playing with it and I asked him if he felt better now that his limb was attached. He is so addicted to it, it's crazy. I want one!

Thanks for stopping by Two Toddlers. I love your writing and look forward to reading more!
