Why should I hide away to feed my child?

We went to the aquarium on Saturday and I was pleasantly surprised to see this:

It's signs like this that make me think that breastfeeding could become the normal way to feed babies again.

But, maybe it's sending the wrong sign.

Breastfeeding is undeniably my normal, but I have learned that others seem to disagree. Like when I was told to feed my 3-month old baby in the bathroom, or when my brother stated that he thought it was disgusting that I nurse my children, or when people have run out of the room I was nursing in because they felt like it was an intimate act not to be done in public (mind you, this was in my own home), or the latest, when Heather W. at the Better Homes and Garden blog suggested that breastfeeding women should "take it to the bathroom".

It's acts like those that made me feel like I should nurse in the car while out and about, or as a last resort, nurse in a bathroom. It's attitudes like those that make it hard to be a breastfeeding mom.

I wish I had been confident enough to nurse in public. I wish I had been brave enough. I could have helped "normalize" it.

Instead, I nursed in the car so as not to offend anyone. But why would it be offensive? How can the natural act of feeding my child, the way a child was meant to be fed, be even remotely offensive?

I appreciate that there is a nursing room at the aquarium and at the amusement park, and it is really nice that they offer a private place to nurse, but why should I "have" to nurse my child tucked away, out of sight? Why do I feel like I should hide away?

It's a social issue. One that needs to change.

Do you feel that breastfeeding mothers should nurse in private? As a breastfeeding mom, do you feel that you should nurse in private? Do you think having nursing rooms sends the wrong message?

World's Thinnest Wallets by Big Skinny - A Review and Giveaway!

***Giveaway Closed 6/13***

Father's Day is just around the corner and I have the perfect gift idea for the special Dad in your life... a wallet! And not just any wallet. A Big Skinny Wallet.
I recently got the chance to try out a Big Skinny wallet. Well actually, I let the Hubs try one out. He's always complaining about the "brick" in his back pocket so I figured he would be an ideal candidate to really give it a good test.

The first task was to pick out a wallet. Big Skinny has a large selection of men's and women's wallets, card cases and money clips, and passport and travel wallets. The men's section alone has 16 styles to choose from. And for the ladies, 14 different styles. That's a lot of wallets to choose from!

After much consideration, the Hubby decided on the World Wallet.

What makes a Big Skinny wallet different than other wallets?

The main difference is the material. They are made from a durable, water-resistant nylon micro-fiber which is 5-7 times thinner and lighter than leather and just as durable. The design of the wallets is very important as well. The pockets are extra wide and fit 3-5 cards. The pockets also have a rubberized backing making it harder to lose your cards or cash. They are very well made and are tough enough to wash. They even come with a 1-year warranty on materials and workmanship!

Here's the real difference.

I think the photos speak for themselves!

The Hubs is very pleased with his new Big Skinny wallet. And rightly so. He is no longer sitting on a brick!

Head over to Big Skinny and check out their wide selection of very reasonable priced wallets. Priced from $10.95 in a variety of styles and colors, there is something for everyone!

Enter to win a Big Skinny Wallet in choice of style and color!

Visit Big Skinny and tell me what wallet style and color you would choose.

Easy Black Bean Hummus

It's a little ironic that I am posting a recipe. I am no domestic diva, by any stretch of the imagination (although I think I look like one in my super cute new apron). But heck, I can make a super yummy, super simple hummus! This recipe is my own, adapted from several recipes that I have found online. Note that this hummus contains no tahini, so I guess technically it's not hummus, but whatever. Everyone that has tried it thinks it is the bomb! :)

Easy Black Bean Hummus

1 can Chick Peas (garbanzo beans) drained
1 can Black Beans drained
Large clove or 2 of Garlic - minced
1/2 Lemon
1 tablespoon Olive Oil
1 teaspoon Cumin
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1/8 teaspoon Cayenne pepper

Combine all ingredients in a food processor and blend until smooth. Add water until desired consistency is achieved. Chill and serve with pita bread, pita chips, vegetables, or whatever you feel like dipping in it. Also great in wraps or sandwiches!

ENJOY!

Let me be clear, I am not...

I am normally a very non-controversial kinda gal. I lead a fairly normal life. I definitely don't go out of my way to garner attention. I try to fly somewhat under the radar. That's just how I am. That's just who I am.

But, I am not a shy person by any means. I will speak my mind if need be.

Well, need be.

Today, I read a very interesting article over at the Better Homes and Gardens' blog written by Heather W. titled The 10 Commandments of Dining with Little Kids.  This article offers parents and non-parents 10 "gentle reminders" on how to behave at an upscale restaurant. I should have know from the very first sentence that I was going to have issue with what was written. When an article begins "Let me be clear: I am not anti-kid" you know it is going to be anti-kid, and evidently anti-breastfeeding!

If you didn't read the article, here's a brief overview:

Don't block traffic with bulky strollers
Don't order a 10-course dinner
Don't treat your server like a sitter
DON'T BREAST FEED AT THE TABLE
Order kid food
Don't take pictures or video
Don't bring noisy toys
Don't let your child scream
Don't allow your kids to run around
Don't let your kids have a food fight

Wow, this Heather W. has a handle on parenting for sure! Someone needs to get her a book deal.

I normally don't get too bothered when I read such unintelligent garbage, but really. Who is she writing this article for? Sure, several of the "commandments" are legitimate, but aren't they just common sense/courtesy?

The one "commandment" that I take massive issue with is the one on not breastfeeding at the table.
THOU SHALT NOT BREAST FEED AT THE TABLE
Yes, I have seen table-side breast feeding at a four-star restaurant. If at all possible, take it to the ladies room. (Note: most upscale restaurants have really nice restrooms!)
Are you kidding me? Take it to the ladies room?

There is nothing wrong or inappropriate about nursing your baby in public. In fact, in 44 states, a woman has the legal right to breastfeed wherever she wants. As a very pro-breastfeeding mama, I am disappointed by  not only the writer's ignorance, but some of the commentators remarks as well. Even more so, disappointed that such a well respected magazine, who claims to be pro woman and family, would publish such nonsense.

It's opinions and attitudes such as this that make it a reality that only 32% of U.S. babies are exclusively breastfed at 3 months of age. It's opinions and attitudes like this that made me feel like I had to nurse my child in the bathroom. Being a breastfeeding mom in the U.S. is tough. We shouldn't be met with such resistance. It shouldn't even be an issue where a woman chooses to nurse her child.

BHG.com claims to be the premier home and family site. They should use their influence to help promote and normalize breastfeeding, not make it harder on breastfeeding moms.

If you feel strongly about this, I urge you to let them know. I know I'm going to!

Anima Organic Soap - A Review and Giveaway!

***Giveaway Closed 6/4***

I don't know about you, but I love me some bath products! Even better are some good for you bath products!

Have you ever checked out the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database?  Do you know that many of the personal care products on the shelves contain harmful chemicals?

Well, they do. Brands like Body Shop, Lever 2000, Olay, Dove, Safeguard, Palmer's, Basis, Dial, and many more, rank from highly to moderately hazardous. You will be shocked to see what is on the list. Check it out, but I'm warning you, you might feel the need to throw out a lot of stuff in your bathroom.

I'm trying to do a better job buying products that are better for our health. There are just so many toxic ingredients (chemicals and synthetics) out there that we put on our bodies everyday. It's actually pretty scary when you do some research.

That's why I'm feeling good about using Anima Soap.

Anima Soap is a company that is committed to making a product that is good for people and the environment. Anima is the Latin work for soul which makes it is a very fitting name for this company. They sacrifice profit margin in the interest of doing what is good and right. They produce products that put human and ecological values first. Now that's a company with a conscience and soul!

They offer 2 kinds of high quality organic soaps.

The Anima Grapefruit Bar is a great face and body soap. It is made with water, certified organic palm oil, certified organic coconut oil, grapefruit essential oil, rosemary extract, and lye. I love the scent! It is very light and refreshing. It lathers very well and leaves my skin feeling clean, yet slightly moisturized. I really like that it doesn't leave my skin feeling stripped and tight.

The Anima Unscented Baby Bar is made with water, certified organic palm oil, certified organic coconut oil, certified organic jojoba oil, rosemary extract, and lye. It does not contain the grapefruit essential oil, hence it is "unscented". I does have a very slight scent (like you have to put the bar up to your nose and smell very hard), but nothing that leaves a scent on the baby. It is not a "no tear" formula, but I didn't find it to bother the kids' eyes. By the way, "no tear" formulas contain synthetics and chemicals.

These soaps are so reasonable priced! High quality organic soap bars for $1.89 per bar is a great deal! You can buy them in packs of 5, 10, 15 or 40. Give them a try!

Enter to Win 10 bars, 5 of each kind!

Poor, poor, pitiful Bubby

The poor Bubby has been feeling a bit under the weather since early yesterday evening. He's running a bit of a fever that got up to 102 degrees around four this morning. He slept surprisingly well last night, with mama's company of course, and woke up this morning feeling good.

Unfortunately, he's feeling pretty poor again and still has a fever that's hovering around 100 degrees. He's not interested in eating or playing. No other symptoms though. I'm stumped. All I know is my little guy wants nothing but to be held by me. He's so pitiful.

He's gone from this...

to this in a matter of minutes.

I called our pediatrician, and the nurse thought we should just wait it out. If he's not better in the morning to bring him in. I wonder what's wrong. Any ideas mama's?

I wish I could just cuddle with him on the couch all day. Unfortunately, it's a payroll week which means I have about 75 employees that would be pretty ticked off if I didn't get around to paying them.

So, this is what we do. Mama types with one hand while holding the sweet boy. We do what we have to do. I'm just so thankful that I can do my job while taking care of my babies. I guess it's time to break out the BabyHawk. Thank goodness for babywearing!

Update: Took him to the doctor this afternoon. It looks like a viral throat infection. He tested negative for strep, so there's nothing to do but wait it out. Looks like we've got a few more whiny days ahead of us. :(

The MiniMate keeps food fresh longer! A Review and Giveaway!

***Giveaway Closed 6/1***

I am excited to tell you about a product that I got a chance to test out called The MiniMate. The MiniMate is a small gadget that you put in your refrigerator that uses activated oxygen technology to help safely extend the life of fresh produce by oxidizing the germs, bacteria and mold growing on them, as well as oxidizing chemicals and pesticides. The MiniMate technology leaves no toxic by-products, kills bacteria 3000 times faster than chlorine and has full FDA-approval.

Bottom line, the food in your fridge is safer and stays fresh longer. And because your produce lasts longer, you won’t waste as much from spoilage and you will save money!

How much money can you save? I guess that depends on how much produce you end up throwing away. I know that before I began using the MiniMate, I would end up throwing away quite a bit of produce every week. Grapes always went bad before we could eat them all. Strawberries, too. And we go through fruit fast! But now we are able to eat them all before they go bad! Honestly, no lie! I was skeptical too, but it works!

Not only does food stay fresh longer, odors are kept away too. No need for a box of baking soda in the fridge anymore. My mom just went out of town and cleaned out her fridge before she left. She gave me so much food, including some smoked salmon. Well, that salmon is in my fridge now, and believe it or not, there's no fishy smell at all. I just stuck my nose in there to double check, and nope, no odor!

Give it a try. It's on sale for $29.95 plus shipping right now. It comes with a 30 day money back guarantee, so what do you have to lose? For more information on how the MiniMate works check out their website.

The Real Facts About Sustainable Cloth Diapers

This post is part of the Real Diaper Facts carnival hosted by Real Diaper Events, the official blog of the Real Diaper Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to cloth diaper education. Participants were asked to write about diaper lies and real diaper facts. See the list at the bottom of this post to read the rest of the carnival entries.

Cloth diapering has become a normal way of life in our household. We have been cloth diapering since the Bubby was 2 weeks old and we haven't looked back. The decision to cloth diaper was initially made for financial reasons, but it quickly became clear that cloth sustainable diapers were not only great for our wallet, but they were healthier for my baby, and better for the environment as well.

The reactions I get from people when they find out that I use cloth diapers has been very interesting. Sometimes I am met with great interest and enthusiasm when they see how easy modern cloth diapers are. Most of the time though people think I'm crazy. The reason, I believe, is that there is a lot of misinformation out there about sustainable diapers.

A lot of this misinformation has been put out there by disposable diaper manufacturers. And unfortunately it seems like they are just making things up. A perfect example is this page from the Pampers website.

Honestly, if someone wants to use disposable diapers that is their choice and I'm not going to make up lies about disposables to change their mind. But, I will offer some facts about cloth diapers to help them see the benefits of using real sustainable diapers; the benefits for your wallet, your child's health, and the environment.

Disposable Diapers vs Cloth Diapers

Fact: Using cloth diapers can save you money.
You can buy 24 diapers that would last from birth to potty training. I have calculated the cost for many different brands and types of diapers and it ranges from a mere $215 to over $850. According to The Real Diaper Association, the estimated cost of disposable diapers for the first 2 years is $1600! And how many kids do you know that are actually out of diapers in 2 years?

Fact: Cloth diapers are better for my baby.
Some of the chemicals in disposable diapers include dioxin, tributyl-tin, and sodium polyacrylate. Dioxin is a carcinogenic chemical listed by the EPA as the most toxic of all cancer-linked chemicals. Tributyl-tin (TBT) is a toxic pollutant known to cause hormonal problems in humans and animals. And sodium polyacrylate, the super absorbent stuff, used to be in tampons until it was revealed that it increased the risk of toxic shock syndrome.

My conclusion is this: a cloth diaper without all of those chemicals HAS to be better for my baby.

Fact: Modern cloth diapers keep babies dry and comfortable.
One argument that disposable diaper manufacturers try to use is that disposable diapers keep babies skin dryer and more comfortable than sustainable cloth diapers by reducing leaks and locking wetness inside the diaper in a way that cloth doesn't. They claim that this has resulted in a decreased frequency of diaper rash as seen before disposable diapers existed.

The fact is, modern cloth diapers are nothing like their earlier counterparts. Gone are the days of plain cotton prefolds with plastic pants. According to The Real Diaper Association, diaper rash was unheard of before the use of rubber or plastic pants in the 1940's. Modern cloth diapers are breathable and are available with stay dry inners. And try to tell me that wearing a scratchy paper disposable diaper is more comfortable than a soft cloth sustainable diaper.

Fact: Modern cloth diapers are easy to use.
Modern cloth diapers are very similar to disposables, except you wash and reuse them. Gone are the days of pins and plastic pants. There are so many cloth diaper options available today, many with velcro. If you can use a disposable diaper, you can use modern cloth diapers.

Fact: Cloth diapers are better for the environment than disposables.
There are naysayers that want to claim that sustainable cloth diapers are not any better for the environment (because of the water used to wash them) than disposables, but that is just not true. The manufacture and use of disposable diapers amounts to 2.3 times more water wasted than cloth. Disposable diapers also generate sixty times more solid waste and use twenty times more raw materials, including crude oil and wood pulp.

An estimated 27.4 billion disposable diapers are used every year in the U.S. and 92% of them end up in landfills. That's a lot of disposable diapers in landfills! All of that disposable diaper waste just sitting there full of chemicals and human waste, which leaches into our water systems. Just sitting there, for the next who knows how many years. No one knows how long because one has yet to decompose!

But yet, disposable diaper manufacturers like to refer to a flawed impact study that claimed that the impact of cloth diapers and disposable diapers was equal.

Honestly, how can there be any comparison? A "disposable" diaper, full of chemicals and non-decomposing materials that is used one time versus a real sustainable cloth diaper that can be used over and over for not only one baby, but for multiple babies, and then can be used as a cleaning rag. It seems like a no-brainer to me.

Do your own research. See what you discover. But most of all, use your common sense.

Update 5/21: Apparently, Pampers couldn't take the heat. They have deleted their "Myths" about cloth diapers page. Tsk, tsk! Don't mess with us cloth diapering mama's! :)

Mother's Day 2010

I still have a hard time believing that I am deserving of a Mother's Day celebration. It's not that I have a hard time believing I'm a mom, it's just that it feels like a day for my mom, my hubs' mom, and all other mom's, not me. But my husband and children helped me celebrate regardless! Yesterday, I spent the day with my family and was gifted with some very sweet gifts.

Cakes is old enough now to decide what she wanted to give me, so the hubs asked. And what did she get me?

Gardening gloves, so that mama can pick the vegetables!

Bubby got me...

An apron, so mama can cook! The boy likes to eat.

And the Hubs got me...

This necklace (Well, I actually picked it out while we were shopping)

and...

Two of these for the back patio.

What a nice Mother's Day! Mostly because I got to lounge in bed for a little bit and spend the day with my favorite people, but the gifts were nice too!

Do you feel weird celebrating yourself on Mother's Day? How did you spend your day?

The Scoop on Poop - Dealing with soiled cloth diapers

One of the most common question I get when people find out that I cloth diaper is, how do you deal with the poop? It's kind of a loaded question. (Pun intended!) The answer is, there are several ways.

First of all, if you are cloth diapering an exclusively breastfed baby, you don't HAVE to do anything. Breastmilk baby poop is water soluble so you can just throw the diaper in the wash as is. If the thought of that bothers you then you have several options.

These options apply to all baby or toddler poops.

Disposable liners
You can use liners specifically made to line your cloth diapers. The way these work is you lay it inside the diaper and when there's a mess, you just dump the poop and liner in the toilet and flush it away. The diaper remains mess free. I have never used liners so I can't attest for how well they work, but lots of mama's use them and are happy with the results. I don't use them because they cost money and I am cheap!

Plop, Dunk, and Swish Method
As in plop the poop into the toilet, dunk the diaper in the water and swish it around. I personally used this method once Bubby started solids. It worked fine for a while. He seemed to have very plop-able poops and rarely did I have to dunk and swish. And then things changed...

Diaper sprayer
Just think kitchen sink sprayer attached to toilet. Plop and then spray any remaining poop away. Why, oh why didn't I get one of these sooner? We bought ours off eBay, and there are as many brands as places to buy them. They work fabulously and I believe a diaper sprayer is a must for cloth diapering!

Dealing with soiled diapers isn't my favorite thing to do, but really it's not too bad. My son usually has one soiled diaper a day and having a diaper sprayer makes it super simple to take care of.

A friend of mine uses her utility sink to spray out her baby's diapers, how do you deal with your baby's poopy diapers?

On a side note: Did you know that you are supposed to dump the poop (in the toilet) from disposable diapers before discarding? Unfortunately, I used disposables on my daughter, and never once dumped the poop. I had no idea, but it makes sense if you think about it. Poop just sits in our landfills contaminating our water...yuck! Please pass this info along.
