My name is...

Hello! My name is Chanda.

C-H-A-N-D-A

Not Chandra, or

Shandra,

or even Shanda.

It's CHANDA.

Chan (as in Jackie Chan) - da (as in duh)

This is something I have dealt with my entire life. Why is is people want to add an 'R'  and/or change the 'C' to an 'S'? And I'm not only referring to how people pronounce it. People will see it written and automatically add a letter. It will be right before their eyes and they will spell it wrong. Is it really that tricky?

At thirty-nine thirty something years old, I've given up on trying to correct people on the pronunciation. But it irks me to no end when it is misspelled when the correct spelling is right there in front of them (like on Facebook). Sorry for the rant!

Do you have a name that people constantly mispronounce or misspell?

How do (would) you handle it, correct them or let it go?

This why we named our kids whatever we wanted. My husband's name is Marcos. He is called Marcus ALL THE TIME. Even after he says Mar-cOs, they still mispronounce it. Our last name is even worse. So, our kids are Phoenix (which NO ONE can spell but they can pronounce), Gryphon (pronounced Griffin but he gets it pronounced wrong all the time or there are some who don't even try, like at his dentist), and Ramsey. Ramsey isn't born yet but I'm curious to see what happens with his name. My husband said, "No one can spell or say our last name anyway, so lets just name them whatever we want and spell it how we like it." At least if they hate their names, they can hate us together. :P

I can relate. It's Polly not Paulie or Pauly or Paula. My last name is simple but they always reverse the vowels so that I appear to be related to the famous singing brothers that tweeners swoon over. Oh, and my maiden name? Rhymed with a part of the male anatomy so you can guess what my nickname was in high school. Not cool.

I've spent my whole life saying "Hi, I'm Cathy with a C. oh and there's a Y on the end, not an IE." i understand.

What's funny is that I have the most basic name in the world. Mary. And people still mispronounce it and misspell it. It's comical really. One person at Starbucks wrote my name on my drink as "Miri".

I think, it just speaks to how little we pay attention to others. How important our names are to all of us, how usual or unusual.

No one could say my previous married name. To help them I would say it rhymed with Jeronimo. That helped.

You're gorgeous.

Just sayin'... :)

Wow. I am stunned that so many of you have the same problem! Mary nails it...

@Anonymous - Thank you! You made my day! :)
@Pounds4Pennies - The rhyme thing works. I say Chanda like Panda.
@Mary - Seriously...Miri?
@Cathy - I got it right, Cathy with a C! :)
@Polly - This would be my default spelling. Kids are so cruel. :( My son's initials are P.P. I hope he doesn't get made fun of for that.
@MomLovesDeals - I love all of your kids' names!

My name is Renea...Pronounced Renee, But I get everything under the sun. RenEEuh, Renee-uh..It's just Renea. It doesn't help that my sisters name is Rayna, so anybody who knows our family always combine names. Raynay..etc :) I feel your pain!

Mine is Tamara, pronounced tam-ah-rah. I used to be called Tay-may-rah, or Tom-ar-rah. Kids used to sing "Tomorrow" from Annie to me all the time. And spelling my name - ugh, I don't even bother trying to get that. The worst though is when people just CHANGE my name to Tammy! For that reason I despise that name.
I've often thought to drop a vowel; maybe if I changed my name to "Tamra" it would be easier???

I'm in the same boat. The name is Teresha. not Teresa or Theresa or Treesha or Trisha. It's not hard. People need to quite trying to "fix" our names.

Chanda the Eco-Cheap Mom said...

@Teresha - Not hard at all! The way we choose to spell our name is the correct way!
@Tamara - I doubt dropping the vowel would help. People that want to pronounce it correctly will, the others won't bother trying no matter how it is spelled.
@Renea - A lot of times people make it much harder than it is and like to add extra syllables.

You said it right when you commented back that people make it much harder than it is.
My name is Lynanne. Lyn then Anne. Two pretty easy names that you just put together. I have gotten Line-anne, lee-anne, Li-anne, etc. They can't spell it either. Even if it in front of them. My school district used to spell my name wrong. I still have family that spells it wrong as well.
Anymore, I just go by Lyn. Then I always have to say it is Lyn with 1 N not two and no E. I am always so happy when people take the time to try to get it right.

I think people should be able to name their kids whatever they want, but here's a tip:

My name is Shyla and I've been called Sheila, Sharla, Shayla, Shiloh, Shylar, Skyla, Skylar and my personal favorite -- Shylie. My name is always an issue for people. Always. 99% of the time I have to say my name twice when I'm introducing myself.

If my parents had spelled it Shilah some people may have had an easier time of pronouncing it written. The moral of my story? It was great to be a Shyla instead of a fourth Ashley or Jennifer in my class of 53, but it's made for a lot of awkward moments to be asked to pronounce and spell my name and then answer the question "Shyla, are you shy?" for my whole life.
